Bariloche

Argentina - Northern Patagonia

Mountains, chocolate and adventure, San Carlos de Bariloche is the capital of Argentinaā€™s Lake District, a bustling swiss-Alpine style resort surrounded by snow-dusted mountains and volcanoes.

Once centre of the regionā€™s cattle industry, the town was redeveloped in the 1930ā€™s as a tourism hub and the centrepiece for the new Nahuel Huapi National Park. Today, hotels vie with restaurants, bars and chocolate shops along the shores of Nahuel Huapi. Bariloche provides the perfect starting point for exploring Argentinaā€™s picturesque Lake District. Outside the city, chairlifts offer breathtaking, panoramic views from the mountains Cerro Campanario and Cerro Catedral or head out along the magnificent ā€œSeven Lakesā€ or ā€œCircuito Chicoā€ driving loops.

Regular flights link Bariloche with the outside world while access to Chile just across the border is provided by the wonderful ā€œCruce de Lagosā€. This ā€œLake Crossingā€ is a full day (or overnight) combination of bus and boat travel that takes visitors through a picturesque chain of lakes and mountains to reach Puerto Varas the other side of the Andes.
