Recommended lengths of stay in Cameroon is 4 Days for the Atlantic coastal regions and up to 7 ā€“ 10 days when adding Gorilla treks.

 

Modes of transport

Roads

Except for the several relatively good toll roads which connect major cities (all of them one-lane) roads are poorly maintained and subject to inclement weather, since only 10% of the roadways are tarred.

Trains

Cameroon’s rail system (Camrail) operates three main lines: YaoundĆ© to N’GaoundĆ©rĆ©; YaoundĆ© to Douala; and Douala to Kumba.

Flying

Internal flights in Cameroon are operated by Camair-Co and connect Douala and YaoundƩ to Maroua and Garoua. The hop between YaoundƩ and Douala.

 

 

Health Precautions

There is a high risk of malaria, so protect yourself against bites and take antimalarials. Full health insurance is recommended as the Cameroon health system is poor quality. Make sure your travel insurance covers the cost of repatriation.

 

 

Food and Drink

Among Cameroonian specialties are: Fufu Corn and Njama Njama (Huckleberry Leaves) Brochettes, known locally as soya (a kind of barbecued kebab made from either chicken, beef, or goat) Sangah (a mixture of maize, cassava leaf, and palm nut juice) Mbanga Soup and kwacoco. eru and water fufu.

 

 

Money

The currency is the Central African franc (CFA) and Cash is king, make sure to bring plenty of Euro and USD.

Credit cards can be used however only in international hotels and bigger tourist locations. ATMs are almost non-existent, and you canā€™t use your credit card to get cash advances at banks.

In Cameroon the power plugs and sockets are of type C and E. The standard voltage is 220 V and the standard frequency is 50 Hz.

 

 

Getting there (stopovers)

Both YaoundƩ and Douala have international airports. flights from Addis Ababa and Nairobi are the easiest cities to fly to from Australian cities.

 

 

Tipping

Tipping is customary in Cameroon but not mandatory. Whilst the actual amount of money to tip is left at your discretion, we would like to recommend (US $ 2 ā€“ 5 per service rendered is acceptable) for porters and waiters and safari drivers / guides (US $ 8 ā€“ 15 per person per day is acceptable).
