WHY WE LIKE THIS HOTEL

Originally built in 1986 by the University of Costa Rica in conjunction with the Smithsonian Institute, the Observatory Lodge is the only hotel actually within the national park, a mere 1.7 miles from the volcano itself and surrounded by a lush private reserve of dense rainforest, tumbling waterfalls and crystalline streams. Wherever you turn, there are magnificent views of the volcano and there are few better spots than to take it all in than from the lodge’s wonderful observation deck. The surrounding forests and tropical gardens abound with wildlife while further afield, you can raft, bike, ride and even hike up Cerro Chato, Arenal’s neighbouring peak. The lodge is admittedly a little dated yet its heritage, which includes a small research museum, and privileged position still puts this among our favourite mid-range options.
