Pondicherry

India - Southern India

Pondicherry or Puducherry as it is now known was an outpost of the French Empire for almost 300 years and to this day retains its French influences.

The city was built on a grid system, neatly divided by a canal and features cobbled streets, pretty houses painted in Mediterranean colours, picturesque gardens and many remnants of its colonial past. Although a seaside town Pondy is not known as a beach destination however the old seafront along Beach Road makes for a lovely stroll especially at dawn or dusk when the atmosphere is quite romantic! Places of interest in the town including the interesting Puducherry museum, several elaborate Catholic churches and the stunning 19th century Botanical Gardens which are home to around 900 species of plants.
