Modes of transport

Roads

Road safety throughout Niger is a concern, and visitors are strongly urged to avoid driving at night outside of major cities. The public transportation system, urban and rural road conditions, and the availability of roadside assistance are all poor.

Trains

There is no train service in Niger.

Taxis

Taxis are available in Niamey. They run at a fixed price for a short journey around the downtown area, or more to go across the whole city. Taxi drivers may charge inflated prices for tourists, so it is expected that you haggle with them to get the lowest price.

Flying

Niger Airlines operates a few domestic services between its major cities.

 

 

Health Precautions

Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for all travelers in all areas of Niger and a yellow fever vaccination is required for all travelers arriving from countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission and is recommended for all travel to Niger. A meningococcus vaccination is recommended for travel during the dry season, between November and June.

 

 

Food and Drink

Dates, yoghurt, rice and mutton are standard Tuareg fare, while riz sauce (rice with sauce) is omnipresent in Niger’s south. Standard restaurant dishes include grilled fish (particularly capitaine, or Nile perch), chicken, and beef brochettes. Couscous and ragout are also popular. Outside Niamey vegetarian options diminish.

Sitting for a cup of Tuareg tea is rewarding and thirst-quenching. For a wobble in your step, try BiĆØre Niger. For a serious stagger, down some palm wine.

 

 

Money

The official currency of Niger is the West African CFA franc.

Getting there (stopovers)

Ethiopian Airlines fly out of Singapore, Dubai and Bangkok daily, with three weekly connections to Niamey from Addis Ababa.

 

Tipping

Tipping is appreciated in Niger and, while a service charge is generally added to restaurant bills, extra tips are still appreciated. Taxi drivers, tour guides, barmen, and porters all take tips. A 10 percent tip is customary.
