Mahdia

Tunisia - Central Coastal Tunisia

Mahdia is a small city considered to have many faces, and in which it can keep its original traditions. The women cover themselves with gold jewellery, and the old houses are traditionally decorated with embroidered hangings.

Enter the town through the Skifa el-Khala or Large Dark Tunnel. This magnificent gate stands at the narrowest point where the peninsula meets land.

Unfortunately, over centuries of time, the walls have been lost, and initially were ten metres thick. The medina here stretches out along a narrow peninsula, surrounded by deep blue waters.
