Diyarbakir

TĆ¼rkiye - Southeastern Anatolia

Diyarbakır has been the cradle of twenty-six different civilisations throughout its 5000-year history. Extending across a basalt plateau close to the banks of the Dicle River, the black basalt triple walls encircling the old town give the city a rather dark appearance.

The city walls are six kilometres long and reinforced with sixteen towers and five gates. Decorated with inscriptions and bas-reliefs, they present a superb example of medieval military architecture.
