A Journey Through Bhutan: Serenity and Culture Unveiled
| Recently, a member of the Oasis Travel team embarked on an in-depth exploration across North East India, Bhutan, and Rajasthan, focusing on Bhutan as a new destination for Oasis. This journey revealed a land of breathtaking beauty, profound tranquillity, and vibrant cultural traditions, leaving a lasting impression and showcasing the wonders that await in this enchanting Himalayan kingdom. Landing at Paro, Bhutan’s only international airport, was an experience in itself. With just 50 specially trained pilots qualified to navigate the mountain ranges by visual markers, the descent was nothing short of remarkable. “Even the airport felt like a temple, with intricate designs and a conveyor belt adorned with miniature temple replicas,” she shared. The adventure began in Thimphu, where a stay at the luxurious Six Senses Thimphu provided a serene retreat overlooking the valley. Highlights included visiting the towering Buddha Dordenma, housing over 100,000 smaller Buddha statues, and attending the annual Thimphu Festival – the undeniable highlight of the trip. “The festival was extraordinary,” she recalled. “It felt like being invited into the heart of Bhutanese culture, surrounded by locals in their traditional attire. Masked dancers, vibrant music, and the stunning setting of the fortress made it a truly special experience. Despite the crowds, it was so calm and welcoming – people were smiling and relaxed.” The journey continued to Paro for the iconic hike to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery, perched dramatically on a cliffside. Bhutan’s charm lies in its gentle pace, intricate architecture, and the warmth of its people. “Even with the crowds, it felt calm and inviting,” she shared. With a daily sustainable development fee in place to preserve the environment and culture, Bhutan ensures every visitor experiences the country in a meaningful way. Bhutan left an unforgettable mark. “It’s a destination many don’t consider, but it’s absolutely worth it. I’d return in a heartbeat.” |
