Butrint, situated in southern Albania, was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage list in 1992. This site has been inhabited since prehistoric times and was part of the Greek and Roman colonies.
Butrint enjoyed a prosperous period during the Byzantine rule and a brief period of Venetian governance before being abandoned in the late medieval era. Today, the archaeological site displays remnants from each of these historical periods. Interestingly, the oldest artifacts discovered at Butrint are a stone hammer and a shaft that date back to the latter half of the second millennium BC.
