Nestled amidst 6000 hectares of wild Patagonian landscapes in the foothills of the Andes, Los Huemules Mountain Reserve is a unique, all-inclusive tented camp accessed along a 20km track from the frontier town of Esquel.
The first of its kind in the area, Los Huemules occupies a private reserve encompassing rivers, old-growth forests and rugged peaks and blends seamlessly into the landscape. Here, the focus is adventure based on sustainability and Los Huemules prides itself on its ecological credentials – 100% recycled wood, zero garbage policy (organic composting / recycling), localised water treatment, energy-efficient stoves etc. The sleeping domes are warm and cosy with wood-burning stoves, thick insulation and snug blankets as well as private wooden decks, In the evening, guests retire to the warmth of the communal dome to enjoy traditional regional cuisine – Patagonian beef, lamb, trout and game accompanied by locally grown produce and an excellent selection of Argentine wines (of course!). Each day is spent exploring the reserve trails either on foot, horse-back or mountain bike accompanied by local guides. Back at the camp, you can take advantage of the bar, mingle with your fellow guests and enjoy board-games in front of a roaring fire. Los Huemules Mountain Reserve occupies a rugged and overlooked corner of Patagonia and lends itself to adventure enthusiasts. Although far from luxurious with limited technology and Wifi, the backdrop is stunning especially if you combine it with the magnificent Los Alerces National Park close by.
