Hacienda, Remote Location $$$$

Location

Wild, remote, windswept and surrounded by towering mountains on the edge of the great southern icefield, there are few lodges that evoke Patagonia more than the historic Estancia Cristina, founded in 1914 on the shores of Lake Argentino. Completely inaccessible by road, access is via boat from Puerto Bandera close to Calafate, a breathtaking journey that has you weaving around huge icebergs and across the face of the Upsala Glacier, the largest of its kind in South America. Nestled amidst 22,000 hectares, the estancia has been sympathetically refurbished to retain the soul of the original homestead, from the typical wood-beamed outbuildings topped with corrugated metal roofs which accommodate the restaurant, living room and museum to the original family-house surrounded by poplar trees replete with a white picket fence.

El Calafate – Luxury Collection

Estancia Eolo$$$$$

Eolo is an excellent luxury option in Calafate and includes guided walking, riding and biking within their rates. Standard visits to the Perito Moreno Glacier and boat trips on Lago Argentino are at additional cost and for this reason, the ranch would suit longer 3-4 night stays to make the most of the superb activities on offer.

Other El Calafate Hotels

Esplendor Calafate$$$$

The Esplendor is a good mid-range option in town whose stylish, modern take on Patagonia offers something truly different in Calafate.
