Garni Canyon is located around 30 km east of the capital Yerevan and contains some of the most dramatic scenery in Armenia.
Nearly every village along the Debed River has a church, a chapel, an old fort, and a sprinkling of khachkars nearby. There are two World Heritage-listed monasteries, Haghpat and Sanahin. It formed millions of years ago by volcanic eruptions followed by rapid cooling that led to the formation of unique rock formations like the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland. The Gorge can be reached from a path alongside Garni Temple or on a cobbled road through the village. In this spectacular scenery, there are many options for leisure, including a walk in the canyon, picnics, and swimming in the ice-cold Azat River. Make sure you take everything you need, including plenty of water.
