The city is an old port previously surrounded by fortifications and is ideally placed between some of Azerbaijan’s best nature reserves. The swamps of the Gizil Aghaj reserve lie to the north and are rich in birdlife, while the Hirkan Forest in the south is home to ancient iron trees and the endangered Caucasian leopard. The region is famed for its citrus fruits and flavoursome cuisine and is the centre for Azerbaijani tea growing.
