The Amazon – Bolivia

Bolivia - Bolivian Lowlands

Bolivia’s Amazon covers huge swathes of the country’s eastern lowlands, an endless sea of green which echoes with the shrill cries of monkeys and tropical birdsong.

For visitors, the most popular destination for jungle adventures is the Madidi National park, two million hectares of protected mountains, cloud-forest and tropical rainforest. Quite simply, the park is the most biodiverse reserve on the planet and harbours a breathtaking array of wildlife including 11% of the world’s known bird species. From La Paz, hopper flights buzz across the eastern slopes of the lush Andean Yungas to reach the steamy, frontier town of Rurrenabaque where visitors then board boats to whizz up the Beni and Tuichi Rivers into the park itself. There, simple lodges, often operated by the indigenous tribes, dot the channels and offer a wonderful jungle experience. Each day, local and naturalist guides lead excursions into the dense canopy, savannah grasslands and waterways; a rich combination of habitats that makes Madidi among the finest destinations for wildlife observation in the entire Amazon.
