Art and history combine at the Pousada Arte Urquijo, a small quirky guesthouse at the heart of historic Paraty. Run by the owner-artist Luz Urquijo, the pousada doubles as a gallery showcasing an eclectic mix of contemporary art and design while maintaining the old-world heritage of the traditional town-house. From the upper floors, the views open across the terracotta tiled rooftops to the sparkling bay and distant Bocaina Mountains. The pousada features a small library, lounge and bar though no restaurant – Paraty boasts a number of good options all in easy reach. The Pousada Arte Urquijo is an excellent base to explore Paraty or take a boat trip to golden beaches or distant islands – Luz is happy to help organise all excursions. In the evening, guests gather at the bar or around the small lap pool for a drink or just retire to the comfort of their hammock. Although the rooms are small and far from luxurious, the Arte Urquijo exudes good taste and a contemporary twist on Paraty’s old world charm, a far cry from the port’s more traditional hotels.
