Sozopol is a busy fishing port and holiday resort popular with East European tourists. The town’s charm owes much to its architecture, the old wooden houses jostling for space, their upper storeys almost meeting across the town’s narrow cobbled streets.
Greek colonists founded the oldest settlement in Bulgaria, Sozopol, in the seventh century BC. The Archeological Museum behind the library holds a worthwhile collection of ancient ceramics and several artefacts uncovered in the local area. Further into the town, follow the signs to the Southern Fortress Wall and Tower Complex, which gives access to a beautifully restored tower dating from the fourth century BC.
