WHY WE LIKE THIS HOTEL

Rising from the dilapidated shell of a traditional, wood-shingled “palafito” built on stilts over the sea, Palafito 1326 has been lovingly restored and retains many of the original hallmarks from the larch tiles and hand carved doors to the zinc roof. Inside, large picture windows throw light onto the warm, timber floors and panels while soft Chilote rugs and a time-honoured wood-burning stove help create a snug, cosy atmosphere. Overlooking the street or the bay with private balconies, the rooms are cosy with roughly hewn furniture and thick woollen Chilote blankets. Breakfast is a hearty affair of home-baked breads and fruits, all eaten together in the communal dining room. In the evening, guests gather on the rooftop terrace and outside deck to admire the beautiful sunsets. There is no restaurant per se though Castro offers an abundance of options close by. The Palafito 1326 is charming, homely option in Castro and offers an insight into traditional Chilote values. Although it offers no great luxury, it is an excellent base from which to visit the island.
