Odzala-Kokoua National Park is one of Africa’s oldest national parks. It was designated in 1935 receiving Biosphere Reserve status in 1977. Covering an expansive 13,500 km2 area, Odzala lies in the heart of the Congo Basin, the second-largest rainforest in the world after the Amazon.
Bais or Salines are significant features of this rainforest. These swampy, grassy areas dotted across the rainforest offer a rare chance to catch a glimpse beyond the ‘green curtain’ into the lives of the forest dwellers. Various mammal species come to the bais regularly to access multiple elements, from water to minerals and salts to sedges and water-loving grasses to water.
