Colombia - Oasis Highlights

There are so many highlights in this fascinating country that it is impossible to list them all here. Our travel consultants will discuss your interests and be able to put a specific itinerary together for you, but below are a few must seeā€™s!

Zipaquira Salt Cathedral

A vast salt mine come Roman Catholic church deep in the bowels of the earth. It seems unlikely but in the cliffs above Zipaquira close to Bogota, this is exactly what you stumble upon. Huge caverns are eerily lit and cast atmospheric shadows over small illuminated chapels ā€“ a wonderful extension to any visit to Bogota or Villa de Leyva.

San Agustin

Deep in the remote foothills of the Andes, the ancient archaeological site of San Agustin is shrouded in mystery, a site where gods, men and monsters stand side by side with burial mounds, tombs and terraces. Only a tiny fraction of the ruins have been uncovered yet this remains one of South Americaā€™s most impressive, and least explored, man-made wonders.

Tayrona National Park

Brazil aside, it is hard to find good beaches in South America yet Tayrona has all the hallmarks of the classic, beach escape. Lush, old growth forest plunges onto golden beaches pounded by the turquoise waters of the Caribbean while the dense vegetation hides tropical birds and ancient, archaeological sites. The perfect end to any itinerary.

The Coffee Fincas

Colombiaā€™s coffee region lies at the heart of the countryā€™s folklore, an area of rolling plantations set amongst colonial towns, soaring peaks and steamy cloud forest. And what better way to experience the area than by basing yourself at a colourful coffee finca? Tour the coffee fields by horseback, take a willy jeep ride to the neighbouring farm or simply kick back in the hammock overlooking the sparkling pool.

Cartagena

South Americaā€™s finest colonial city and world heritage site where historic churches, museums and monuments stand alongside beautiful boutique hotels and galleries. The rampart walls overlook the crystal clear Caribbean and for centuries guarded against pirates and buccaneers alike. Away from town, you can escape to dreamy beaches or take a boat trip to the coral islands of the Rosario archipelago. Cartagena is quite simply the highlight of any trip to Colombia.
