Perched on the edge of the Chicamocha Canyon, Barichara is a step back in time, a charming yet sleepy colonial gem famous for its cobbled streets, elegant chapels and white-washed architecture all topped with its signature terracotta tlies.
Founded in 1705 and declared a National Monument in 1978, Barichara is lauded as Colombia’s prettiest town and famous for its traditional culture passed from one generation to the next with over 400 artisans dedicating themselves to handicrafts based around textiles, paper, ceramics and wood. The surrounding countryside is no less picturesque and marked with lush rolling hills, deep canyons and beautiful waterfalls, a wonderful destination for biking, riding and walking. Among the highlights is the 9km “Camino Real” trail to Guane, an ancient stone pathway, originally built by the Indigenous Guane people which offers sweeping views and gives an insight into the area’s Indigenous heritage .
