Monteverde

Costa Rica - Costa Rican Highlands

Thin wisps of mist are suspended amongst the lush jungle canopy of Costa Rica’s most famous cloudforest reserve – Monteverde.

Founded in 1972, the reserve straddles both the Pacific and Caribbean flanks of the Tilarán Mountains, Costa Rica’s great continental divide and encompasses some 10½ thousands hectares of tropical forest. With altitude ranging between 1200 and 1800m above sea-level, Monteverde boasts 6 distinct ecological zones and harbours an extraordinary diversity of flora and fauna. Over 100 species of mammals and 400 bird species have been recorded within the reserve including the iconic quetzal. Today, tourism has firmly taken root with a well-developed network of accommodation and activities. Each day visitors venture along the forest trails or head high into the lush canopy via suspended walkways or thrilling zip-line tours. Close by, there are coffee plantations, frog- and orchid gardens and even butterfly houses to explore.
