WHY WE LIKE THIS HOTEL

The Grano de Oro is our favourite option in the city and ideal for one or two night stays before venturing into Costa Rica’s national parks. The private residence was built at the turn of the 20th century has been beautifully restored to its former elegance. Polished hardwood floors are wrapped around bromeliad filled inner courtyards and fountains while tropical flowers and Costa Rican artwork compete with fine, French-inspired décor. The hotel’s acclaimed, French-run restaurant fuses tropical Costa Rican flavours with traditional old-world recipes. You can expect dishes such as Canadian duck served with a caramelized fig and sea bass baked with macadamia nuts while desserts verge on the decadent – coffee and chocolate Grano de Oro “pie” or chocolate orange soufflé. In the evening, guests can retire to the bar or the leafy rooftop terrace for views over the surrounding volcanoes or even star-gaze from the warmth of a jacuzzi.
