Once a an oceanographic research vessel for the Royal Dutch Navy, the MV Plancius was given a total refit in 2009 and is among the latest additions to the Antarctica fleet. Strong and nimble, the 293ft. ice-strengthened expedition vessel is also surprisingly quiet allowing passengers to immerse themselves in the pristine beauty of the Antarctic.The Plancius exudes space, inside and out including a full walk-around on deck 3, perfect for wildlife observation.
Spread over 6 decks, she was designed to carry a maximum of 116 passengers in 53 modern, unassuming cabins. All are private en-suite yet offer a mix of bunks, berths and beds, some with portholes and others with larger windows. The décor is minimalist with neutral, contemporary colours. The restaurant doubles as a lecture room while other communal spaces feature a library, infirmary and a panoramic bar/observation lounge, perfect for admiring the outside world.
The Plancius offers a range of 10-18 night cruises including exciting base-camp expeditions with hiking, snowshoeing, kayaking and even overnight camping. Expeditions are led by highly experienced staff and are geared towards spending as much time away from the vessel as possible. The MV Plancius is an excellent option in the Antarctic. Although the ship itself offers no great luxury, the itineraries and staff are first class and the feedback always glowing.
