Bahariya Oasis, was a critical agricultural centre in Pharaonic times, exporting large quantities of wine to the Nile Valley. Today it is famed for its dates and olives.
Bawiti, the main village in the oasis, is very picturesque with palm groves surrounding a cluster of mudbrick houses.
Hot and cold springs surround the oasis, and just west of Bawiti a hot spring called Ain Bioshmu is used by the villages for washing and swimming.
The Oasis is home to the ruins of the Temple of Alexander the Great, built in 332 BC, lying just north from where a significant discovery of mummies was escavated. Not the pride of the Bawiti Museum.
