Protected since 2011 by UNESCO World Heritage, the Konso Cultural Landscape is named after its agriculturist inhabitants, who have moulded their 230km2 homeland into the productive agricultural land. A striking feature of Konso is the concentrated walled villages or hilltop paleta. These unusual constructions create a maze-like feeling and are only towered over by generation poles which are erected every 18 years to celebrate a new generation. The Konso are also renowned for their waka grave-markers, anthropomorphic hardwood statues carved to mimic the deceased, and for their communally constructed reservoirs.
