Georgia - Central Georgia

Mtskheta was the ancient capital of the Eastern Georgian Kingdom from the Third Century BCE to the Fifth Century CE, is 20 km from Tbilisi, at the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers.

The city is located on an ancient trade route and was also the location where Christianity was proclaimed as the kingdom’s official religion and continues to function as the headquarters of the Georgian Orthodox Church. Visit Jvari a 6th Century Monastery listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the rivers and the city and the perfect place for those looking to travel back in time and enjoy the architecture of the Middle Ages. Archaeologists have unearthed evidence of Mtskheta’s status as a major trading post. Glass perfume bottles, Greek and Aramaic writings, pottery, metalwork, and jewellery have been discovered in abundance, and many examples are on show in the town’s museum.
