Three hours north of the capital, Lake Atitlan is the jewel in the crown of the Guatemalan highlands – a shimmering expanse of turquoise water framed by rugged hills and soaring volcanoes. For centuries Tz'utujil and Kaqchiquel Mayas have plied its shores and continue to do so today leaving a legacy of indigenous languages, regional textiles and fiercely proud traditional villages. Stay a few days and you can enjoy breathtaking views across the water; take boat trips to the nearby villages such as Panajachel, San Pedro La Laguna and Santiago Atitlan and delve into Atitlan’s rich heritage. Close by, you can explore the wonderful market towns of Comalapa and Solola while for adventure enthusiasts, you can paddle, bike and hike along the shores of the lake.
