Perhaps more than any city in the world, Hiroshima is famous for one moment in history. An American B-29 bomber named Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on August 6, 1945, turning the city into a nuclear inferno and killing an estimated 140,000 in the final chapter of World War II.
However, Hiroshima has risen like a phoenix from the ashes and rebuilt itself as one of Japan’s most laid-back, vibrant cities full of wide boulevards, art museums, great food, and friendly, welcoming people. Hiroshima is also home to the “okonomiyaki” (derived from the word okonomi, meaning “what you like” or “what you want”, and yaki, meaning “grilled” or “cooked”), a Japanese superb savoury pancake containing a variety of ingredients.
