Vantnajokull National Park

This iconic volcanic region covers an impressive area of over 1,400,000 hectares, which accounts for nearly 14% of Iceland’s land.

It consists of ten central volcanoes, eight subglacial, including two of Iceland’s most active. The interaction between these volcanoes and the rifts beneath the Vatnajökull ice cap yields numerous fascinating phenomena, such as the jökulhlaup – a sudden flood resulting from a glacier margin breach during an eruption. This recurring event contributes to the formation of unique sandur plains, river systems, and ever-changing canyons. Endemic groundwater fauna that survived the Ice Age thrive in this volcanic region.
