Khajuraho

India - Delhi and the North

Best known for its exquisite temples that date back to AD950, Khajuraho is located in a remote area between Agra and Varanasi. The town itself is not particularly attractive or interesting, however the nearby complex which features 21 intricately stone carved temples constructed by the Chandella dynasty is highly recommended especially for those looking to get away from the typical tourist trail.

The temples are especially known for their Kama Sutra sculptures with intricate carvings covering every pillar and depicting different scenes of the bygone era. In close proximity to Khajuraho lies Panna National Park, although not as well known as the likes of Ranthambhore and with tiger sightings pretty rare it does provide a more intimate wildlife experience. Khajuraho can be reached by an interesting off the beaten track road trip from Agra, via Gwalior and Orchha, or for those short on time it is just 1 hours flight from either Delhi or Varanasi.
