Located just three hours by road or train from Agra, Gwalior is the largest, most historical town in Northern Madhya Pradesh and is most well known for its Ancient fort, outstanding palaces, sacred temples and glorious monuments.
Gwalior has a fascinating history which can be traced back to the 6th century AD where it is believed that the city was named after the saint ‘Gwalipa’, who allegedly cured the king’s deadly disease. Situated 100m above Gwalior the vast fort complex dominates the city and is a sight definitely worth exploring especially on a clear day where the view from the fort walls is simply breathtaking. For those travelling in October/ November the city hosts the annual Tansen music festival in memory of the great musician whose birthplace was Gwalior, the atmosphere is electric and a must for classical music lovers.
