Located on the banks of the River Vaigai, Madurai is one of India’s oldest cities and is home to the spectacular Sri Meenakshi Temple which takes up a huge area of the town and was built during the same era as the Taj Mahal.
The temple is an exquisite example of South Indian Hindu architecture, laden with colourful stucco images and elaborate carvings. It is also a great place to visit in order to gain a greater understanding of Hinduism, and if you’re lucky you may witness a ceremony or a temple elephant giving a blessing. Whilst visiting Madurai it is also worth exploring the Ghandi museum which gives an informative insight into the life of the great Indian leader. Madurai is particularly vibrant when a festival is taking place and pilgrims flock to the Great Temple of Meenakshi.
