India - Southern India

Mahabalipuram is a welcoming, World Heritage listed port town located less than two hours drive from Chennai in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. The town itself is very small and best explored by bicycle or on foot.

The main attraction of Mahabalipuram is the magnificent Shore Temple, which although ravaged by the elements and the pounding ocean waves, still reflects the glorious past of the intrepid merchants, a visit at sunset is particularly memorable. The other must see site in Mahabalipuram are the five Ratha’s, located at Pancha Rathas monument complex. For those travelling in December/January then we highly recommend visiting Mahabalipuram over a weekend so you can take in a dance performance as part of the towns annual four week dance festival.
