Gangtok is the capital of the small region Sikkim and although a bit of a concrete jungle it makes for a fascinating stop enroute to Darjeeling from Kalimpong.
The area has a significant Tibetan influence which is evident through the local pagodas, monasteries and general architecture. One of the main highlights of Gangtok is the Institute of Tibetology, a great place to learn more about Buddhism and Tibetan culture a must visit on any itinerary.
