Ranthambhore National Park

India - Wildlife in India

Located near the town of Sawai Madhopur, Ranthambhore National Park is one of the main areas in India where tigers still roam. The park was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1955 and in 1973 became part of the project tiger program, since being declared as one of the projects greatest success stories.

The park covers an area of 400 square kilometres and was once the private hunting grounds of the Maharajas of Jaipur who played host to royalty and important dignitaries from all over the world including Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh in 1961. Although most famous for its tigers Ranthambhore is also home to a large variety of animals including sambar, panther, marsh crocodile, sloth bear and leopard, as well as being a bird watcher’s delight.

The type of transport being used for game viewing in Ranthambhore National Park is strictly controlled and allocated by the park authorities. Game drives in the park are always in shared vehicles – in a jeep or a canter (similar to a safari style bus). We will always try and confirm the best available form of transportation, namely jeeps, for game drives however occasionally clients will be allocated a seat in a canter. This allocation can only be confirmed the day before the game drive.
