On a high plain, surrounded by the mountains of Qanavol and Angooran, the town of Zanjan comprises two broad valleys known as Zanjan Rood and Sefid Rood.

The architectural wonder of Soltaniyeh is close by, while the weather-beaten hoodoos of Behestan Castle and the curiously striped Colourful Mountains lie further afield. Scenic roads radiate to Khal, the Caspian, the hidden delights of the Katale Khor Caves, and the superb Takht-e Soleiman ruin.

The city claims a grand covered bazaar, beautiful mosques, and several unique museums.
