Day 2-3

Amboseli National Park

You will explore Nairobi on a day tour and visit the Karen Blixen Museum. The museum is the beautiful and historic farmhouse where Karen Blixen, author of ā€œOut of Africaā€, lived between 1917 and 1931 until she left Kenya after a series of personal tragedies. Lunch will follow in Nairobi before travelling to Amboseli National Reserve, arriving in the afternoon.

The next day, head into the Amboseli National Park for a full day of game viewing in one of Kenyaā€™s most famous parks. Amboseli is known for its huge elephant bulls with their magnificent tusks, which make for the ultimate safari in Kenya. Picture magnificent wildlife with the snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro in the background.

Day 4

Arusha

This morning, after a leisurely breakfast, make your way to the Tanzania border and then to Arusha. En route, stop and hike to the Marangu waterfalls. It is a moderately strenuous walk but well worth the effort at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. Continue to Arusha via Moshi town ā€“ the gateway to the Kilimanjaro National Park.

Day 5

Tarangire National Park

After breakfast, you will be collected from you hotel in Arusha and set off towards Tarangire National Park for a full dayā€™s game drive. The breath-taking views of the Masai Steppe, and the mountains to the south, make this safari to Tarangire a truly memorable experience. Tarangire is as well known for its huge elephant population as it is for the striking baobab trees. It forms the centre of an annual migratory cycle that includes up to 3000 elephant, 25,000 wildebeest and 30,000 zebra that Tanzania is famous for.

Day 6-7

Lake Manyara National Park

After breakfast, you will be collected from the hotel and set off towards Lake Manyara National Park. The spectacular reserve is located at the north-western corner of Lake Manyara, a hollow soda lake that lies at the foot of the Great Rift Valleyā€™s western escarpment. Enjoy a scenic drive in the park known not only for its large flocks of flamingos but also for the elusive tree-climbing lions.

The next day set out to experience the cultural diversity of Mto-wa-Mbu, starting at the market and visiting a Chagga family producing banana beer and passing by many different farms. On the way, your guide will introduce you to the various fruits and vegetables growing in the area and explain the irrigation system that sustains local crops. After having a delicious, home-cooked meal in a traditional homestead, enjoy a visit to a Maasai Boma for the cultural encounter of a lifetime. The Maasai people are semi-nomadic herders, who choose to live a traditional lifestyle and are known for their distinctive traditional attire. In the late afternoon, embark on a walking tour to Lake Papyrus. View this magnificent lake filled with abundant birdlife and hippos. If time allows, you can do some light trekking up to the waterfall. From here you will view the lake on top of the Rift valley wall; then onto the banana plantation and rice fields, ending off the tour with a local village visit.

Day 8

Ngorongoro Crater

This morning, enjoy a game drive in the world-renowned Ngorongoro Crater. For many, this wildlife spectacle is the pinnacle of their Africa safari experience. The Ngorongoro Crater boasts all of the ā€˜Big 5ā€™, including a small population of endangered black rhinos. After a picnic lunch, head towards the Serengeti through the stunning Southern Plains. This is the area that the Serengeti is best known for ā€“ the endless, undulating grass savannah with rocky outcrops that serve as isolated wildlife refuges.

Day 9-10

Serengeti National Park

You will spend the next two days on game drives around the Seronera area of the Serengeti. The Serengeti is divided into three main areas. Seronera is the most central and accessible region and this is where the Park headquarters is based, as well as most of the larger lodges and communal campsites. This part of the Serengeti is characterised by open plains of grassland, packed with animals. The Seronera River is the lifeblood of the Serengeti and this area is renowned for great game viewing all year round. It is also particularly good for lion and cheetah sightings, as well as the most elusive of all big cats, the leopard.

Day 11

Lake Victoria

After breakfast, make your way to Lake Victoria. Pass through the villages of the Sukuma tribe, who grow ground nuts, sorghum and cassava and keep livestock. Life continues here simply as it has for ages, but with a few poignant reminders of the 20th century. Some leisure time in the afternoon, or take a bird-viewing walk along the lake shore.

Day 12-14

Masai Mara National Reserve

This morning, you can take part in a boat excursion to one of the local fishing villages before continuing your journey northwards across the border into Kenya. Here head to the Masai Mara, the traditional land of the Maasai people, who are permitted to graze their cattle in this area.

When to travel

jan feb mar apr may jun jul aug sep oct nov dec

Kenya lies on the Equator, therefore the dry and wet seasons have relatively stable and pleasant temperatures, and allow year round safaris and game viewing. Many parts of the country are at an altitude of 2000m. These highlands, e.g. Laikipia, Mathews Range and the Masai Mara experience a cool and temperate climate. Lower regions at an altitude if 1200m, such as the semi-desert areas of Samburu/Shaba, Meru and the coastal strip, can reach a dry and comfortable 35Ā° C during the day.

Add onā€™s

There are a multitude of add on holiday options to this East African itinerary, for example you could spend a few days in Nairobi or Dar es Salaam and explore these cities with its rich cultural heritage or a few days on the beach in Zanzibar.
