You will visit the city’s famous Gourmet San Juan Market, while the kids get an activity book to keep them engaged and there is even a stop at a playground to burn off some energy.  One of the highlights for the kids on this tour may well be the latest invention of the churro ice cream sandwich!

Day 4

FLy to Merida

State capital of the Yucatan, Merida is a charming colonial city founded by the conquistador Francisco de Montejo in 1542 on the site of the Mayan centre T’ho (“city of five hills”). Today, modern Merida has spilled over the city walls yet at its heart, the colonial architecture of the original “white” city has been beautifully preserved and provides a wonderful base for exploring the northern Yucatan.

Day 5

Uxmal & The Choco-Story Museum

Visit Uxmal, a World Heritage Site located 80km south of Merida. Its architecture is characterized by low horizontal palaces set around courtyards, decorated with a profusion of symbolic motifs and sculptures depicting the long-nosed rain god Chaac. Explore the magnificent buildings, including the House of the Magician – which dominates the site, the Nunnery, and the House of Turtles.

Afterwards, visit the Choco-Story museum.  It offers a delightful journey into the world of chocolate and its rich history. This interactive museum immerses visitors in the ancient traditions of the Maya civilization, showcasing the significance of cacao through engaging exhibits and hands-on workshops. You can explore botanical gardens with cacao trees, witness a traditional Mayan ceremony, and even taste freshly made chocolate. It’s a perfect blend of culture, history, and deliciousness.

Explore the magnificent ruins set in a dense jungle, including the Pyramid of Kukulcan – its height and striking geometric design dominating the whole site, the Great Ball Court – the largest and most impressive in Mesoamerica, the Sacred Cenote – a natural well used for human sacrifice, and many other beautiful temples. After the visit enjoy an early dinner followed by the magical light and sound show (Kukulkan nights).

When to travel

jan feb mar apr may jun jul aug sep oct nov dec

Mexico is a wonderful year-round destination although each region has its own separate micro-climate. In the south, temperatures range between 25 – 35° in the lowlands and on the Pacific and Yucatan Peninsula. Here, days are warmer and more humid between May and October, the rainy season where afternoons often end with a short tempestuous downpour. However, Mexico’s Caribbean coast does lie on the hurricane belt which is at its height between the months of September and October. Travelling north through Mexico’s colonial highlands up into the Sierra Madre Mountains, temperatures drop down into the 10’s and beyond owing to the altitude especially over Christmas although days tend to be bright and generally sunny. Baja California is dry, arid and hottest between January and February, a time that coincides with excellent walking in the Copper Canyon and whale-watching in the lagoons of Magdalena Bay.

Add on’s

If you are wishing to extend your time in Mexico, you could add in more destinations in this fascinating country or for something completely different head to Costa Rica for outdoor adrenaline activities and wildlife, or Guatemala for beautiful scenery, indigenous culture and charming colonial cities.
