Day 1-3

Chapada dos Veadeiros – A Lost World!

Fly into Brasilia where you will be met and driven out into the breathtaking Chapada dos Veadeiros, an ancient landscape of soaring tepuis, roaring rivers and magnificent waterfalls. Explore the trails, swim in the crystal-clear pools of Cachoeira dos Saltos or hike out to the Mirante da Janela viewpoint for sweeping views across the landscape. For nature lovers, you can join guided walks to spot the resident wildlife or visit the small crystal mining community of São Jorge or wander amidst the weird and wonderful lunar-like landscapes of the “Valley of the Moon”.

Day 4

Into the Cerrado

A long day as you drop out of the Chapada dos Veadeiros and head into the Cerrado, Brazil’s great savannah. On route, why not break up the journey with a visit to the stunning Almecegas I waterfall and perhaps a refreshing dip at the base of Almecegas II. Pousada Trijunção sits at the heart of a 33,000 hectare private reserve and featured in the “Desert & Grasslands” episode of David Attenborough’s “Planet Earth Three” in late 2023.

Day 5-8

Pousada Trijuncao & the maned Wolf

Pousada Trijuncao is the perfect base from which to explore the extraordinary flora and fauna of the Cerrado, with over 251 species of mammals, and 482 reptiles and amphibians. Although much of the environment has already been lost, this is THE place to observe Maned Wolf as well as a host of other creatures such as ocelot, tapir, Greater Rhea and neotropical otters. Each day, you will join your fellow guests on daily wildlife safaris which range from guided walks and 4×4 drives to kayaking on the River Formoso, bird watching night-spotting. Join the Onçafari tracking team, and there is every chance that you will observe Maned Wolf, perhaps even catching up with Nhorinha and her cubs who starred in David Attenborough’s wildlife series.

When to travel

jan feb mar apr may jun jul aug sep oct nov dec

Brazil is a year-round destination and no matter what month you visit, you can find a golden, sun-kissed beach if you are prepared to travel. The tropical north straddles the equator and is warmer – up to 40° at the height of summer – and wetter around the Amazon basin. Heading south, temperatures cool off especially towards the south dropping as low as 15° in winter with even snow falling on the mountains of the Serra Geral close to the border of Argentina. Between November and April, Rio and the south provide ideal beach conditions and are hot and steamy with tempestuous downpours particularly in January through to March. During this period, Iguassu Falls are at their most impressive – though at times the spray can obscure the views – while the Pantanal is oppressive and worth avoiding. Outside these months, head to the north-east coast for sun, hottest (and wettest) on the Bahian coast between April and July.

Add on’s

For the ultimate wildlife add-on, why not combine the Maned Wolf with the a dedicated jaguar safari in Brazil’s Pantanal, home to a dizzying array of flora and fauna? Or fly north into the steamy Amazon and enjoy a naturalist cruise or a stay at a remote jungle lodge. For something very different, why not visit the glorious colonial towns of Paraty or Salvador where you can also enjoy some R&R on golden beaches beneath swaying palms.
