Kamakura

Japan - Tokyo and Kanto Region

Less than an hour south of Tokyo, Kamakura is a ā€œmust-seeā€ destination close to the capital. It boasts a rich political heritage. It was the political nucleus of Japan when it was chosen as the seat of a new military government in 1192, and the Kamakura government continued to rule the country for over a hundred years.

Sometimes called the ā€œKyoto of Eastern Japanā€, Kamakura offers a wealth of temples, shrines and other historical monuments; with 65 Buddhist temples and 19 Shinto shrines spread throughout the town. This pleasant destination is framed on three sides by wooded hills and on the fourth, by the ocean. In the summer, Kamakuraā€™s population of 174,000 is boosted by sun-seekers who descend on popular Yuigahama Beach.
