This island resort is accessed by a 100 minute boat ride from Sandakan across the Sulu Sea. The unpopulated island is covered by thick tropical island vegetation is ringed by an endless pure white sandy beach which takes under 30 minutes to circumnavigate.
The 23 spacious and tastefully decorated rooms and bungalows are set on the beach side. We definitely recommend the stand alone chalets with private balconies over the more “standard” room. There are no in room TV’s or telephones etc, this is a place to truly relax and leave your worries behind you! All rooms have fans, refrigerators, tea and coffee making facilities and en-suite bathrooms with hot water. There is a TV in the main building as well as internet access should you require to get back in touch with the “real” world. The restaurant serves great seafood and has a relatively well stocked bar.
The island is fast becoming a hot diving destination as the colourful macro, wrecks (just a couple of minutes off shore) and seasonal appearance of the occasional whale shark are becoming more publicised. Situated within the “Sea Turtle Corridor”, Lankayan Island is also a nesting place and foraging ground for sea turtles; most commonly Green Turtle and Hawksbill Turtle and you should have a chance to see turtles nesting as well as new hatchlings being released to the sea (June to September).
Lankayan Island makes a great choice for anyone looking for a few days isolated tranquility as well as a great choice for divers. The eco credentials of the resort are helped by it having its own water treatment facility and an onsite specialist takes care of the turtle hatchery.
