To get to the Lodge from Sandakan takes approximately 2.5 hours by boat. As you cruise through the beautiful Kinabatangan River, you may see some of Borneo’s rare and endangered species including the Bornean pygmy elephants, orangutans and proboscis monkeys.

WHY WE LIKE THIS HOTEL

Sukau Rainforest Lodge (SRL) was born from a vision of creating a complete ecotourism experience. It was built in 1995, with the mission to excel as an ecolodge by providing a unique experience in hospitality, interpretation, conservation with local community participation and leadership development.

All 40 rooms have solar-powered ceiling fans, ac, mosquito netting and en suite facilities with hot water. Other facilities on offer include an open dining area, library and lounge area with cane and bamboo sofas.

The lodge has recently been awarded status as a National Geographic Unique Lodge of the World, one of only 25 in the world, and the only one in Southeast Asia. It is the only lodge that uses electric motor on all river boats, and has a great range of facilities for such a remote area (it is the only lodge with a plunge pool and has relaxing and well-designed communal areas).

Aside from the excellent wildlife spotting the resort offers foot massage, nightly wildlife talks by the in-house expert, and has some lovely trails to explore from the lodge.

The majority of the staff are local, and since opening the lodge has helped to lift families out of poverty. They may be a bit shy and their English is not perfect, but they are very charming.

There is a media room – well, a room with a TV – that shows excellent documentaries about the abundant wildlife found in the region.
