This small lodge is situated on a sand island approximately a one hour boat journey from Sandakan. The rooms are very basic and simple yet clean and functional. Oasis Travel will always try to secure rooms with air conditioning and en-suite bathroom but with so few rooms and the popularity of this experience we suggest you book early or be flexible with your itinerary.
A small restaurant, shop and common area are on hand but little else in terms of facilities. There is a video presentation about the island and the turtles in the common area.
All the guests wait in the common area for one of the rangers to guide you to the spot where a turtle has come ashore to lay its eggs. Turtles come ashore almost every night but as with anything in nature, it is not guaranteed! Sometimes you have to be prepared to hang around until late in the night, so we suggest you bring along a good book or games to keep you occupied whilst you wait, but when you do see a laying turtle, we can say from personal experience, it is well worth the wait! In the day time you can swim and snorkel in the clear waters around the island or just relax and soak up the rays.
The island is a protected conservation area and does have a couple of strict rules;
1/. Photographing the turtles is strictly prohibited
2/. You cannot wander around the island alone between 6am and 6pm
Best time for green turtles is between July and October and hawksbill turtles between February and April.
