Comino Island got its name from the Arabic term for a ‘sheltered spot’. It was an ideal location for the Knights to construct a tower to protect Maltese waters from Turkish corsairs attacking defenceless ships.

The tower was completed in 1618 with an impressive 56 massive guns and a crew of 130 men. During the insurrection against the French Napoleonic occupiers, the tower bombarded French positions as far away as Valletta. With four turrets 80 metres above sea level and walls 6 metres thick, the tower is a magnificent sight to behold. Visitors can explore it on Fridays through Sundays, and it is worth visiting Comino Island.
