High Atlas and Middle Atlas - Morocco
Known by the Berbers as ‘Idraren Draren’ or the Mountains of Mountains, this environ becomes a trekker’s paradise from spring through to autumn. The High Atlas’ extends diagonally across Morocco for roughly 1000km, encircling Marrakesh to the south and east from the Atlantic Coast to the north of Agadir. With jagged Jurassic like peaks acting as a weather barrier between the mild, Mediterranean climate to the north and the encroaching Sahara wilderness to the south.
The low-rise Middle Atlas Mountains South of Fez, brandish Oak and cedar forests creating invigorating pockets of woodland and an easy-going hiking terrain, taking in Berber hill towns and villages. Further south, the forests succumb to spectacular barren slopes and the arid regions of the desert.
