If Fes is the cultural heart of Morocco, then Marrakech is undoubtedly the tourist epicentre, an imperial city that resonates across North Africa and which evokes the mystery and charm of Morocco. Nestled amidst the foothills of the High Atlas, the town is centred around the bustling Jamaa el Fna; the first market square set deep within the medieval medina. Here as the sun sets, the city comes as alive as locals and tourists flock to enjoy the entertainment provided by the resident acrobats, story-tellers, snake-charmers and dancers. For visitors, there is so much to see and do. Stay in a traditional riad close to the walled medina, and you can explore the chaotic clutter of markets, souqs, and bazaars or take in the many historical sites such as the Badi Palace and Koutoubia Mosque famous for its towering minaret. When the temperature rises, you can seek shelter in the colourful bars and restaurants or relax in the picturesque Menara and Majorelle Gardens.
A short distance away, the snow-capped High Atlas mountains provide a welcome relief from the city bustle and offer excellent walking, hiking and day-trips as well as an insight into traditional Berber culture.
