Chefchaouen

Morocco - Mediterranean Morocco

Chefchaouen is a picturesque town in northern Morocco, a vibrant splash of blue set against the dramatic backdrop of the Rif Mountains.

Founded in 1471 as a fortress town to curb the advances of the Portuguese invaders, the city multiplied with the arrival of Jewish and Moorish refugees following their expulsion from Spain in 1492. Today, Chefchaouen provides a beautiful introduction to Morocco, a strong collection of winding alleys, handicraft markets and traditional blue townhouses within the medina that lack the edge of other Moroccan centres. Base yourself in a riad, and you can explore the souks, watch the world go by from the Plaza Uta el-Hammam or head into the surrounding mountains for some excellent walking and hiking.
