From dunes and deserts to mountains and medinas, here are our pick of Moroccoās most captivating sights!
Marrakech
It is no wonder that Marrakech is the tourist centre of Morroco. Indeed, it is hard to escape the exotic allure of the famous Jamaa el Fna square ā the beating heart of Marrakech. Here, as the sun sets, you can join the crowds or head to a rooftop cafĆ© to enjoy the entertainment ā jugglers, acrobats, dancers and snake-charmers. The imperial city has more than its share of monuments and attractions from the Badi Palace and Koutoubia Mosque to the bustling medieval medina. Yet, there is always an escape! Ā Just outside the old town, you can unwind in the picturesque Menara and Majorelle Gardens or even base yourself within manicured oasis of Palmeraie amidst flowing gardens, fountains and orange groves.
Chefchaouen
Morocco can prove an assault on your senses as you take your first plunge into Fez, Marrakech or Casablanca. Chefchaouen, on the other hand, is a gentle introduction to Morocco, a beautiful splash of blue amidst the Rif Mountains. Here, you can wander the painted alleyways of the medina relatively un-bothered by the market hawkers and soak up the atmosphere from the cobbled Uta-el-Hammam Square. Outside the town, you can walk in the surrounding mountains or take a dip in the Cascades d’Akchour rapids.
Atlas Mountains
The Atlas run the length of Morocco, a range that evokes the mystery and intrigue of North Africa. Dotted with Berber villages and crumbling Kasbahs from Imlil across to the iconic ruin of Ait Benhaddou, the mountains offer a wonderful array of landscapes and destinations to explore. Hike up Mount Toubkal ā the highest mountain in North Africa; relax amidst the lush slopes of the Ourika Valley or head into the bronze, sun-burnt canyons of the Dades and Todra Gorge.
Essaouira
There is no better balm to negotiating the hectic medinas of Fez and Marrakech than by finishing your trip on the pretty coastal resort of Essaouira. Set around a sweeping beach sheltered by the Purpuraires Islets just of the coast, the city maintains a relaxed, hippy feel where you can unwind within the old city ramparts un-accosted by the daily grind.
