Finnmark Plateau

Norway - Northern Norway

The Finnmark Plateau, also known as Finnmarksvidda, boasts a unique topography that sets it apart from most of Norway. It is not entirely flat like a prairie but comprises undulating hills, low ridges formed by the ice age glaciers, marshes, and many lakes.

The serene streams and rivers between the lakes ultimately empty into the Alta-Kautokeino River in the west and the Deatnu/Tana River in the east. The Finnmark plateau is a haven of natural resources. The lakes teem with various fish species, including trout, char, whitefish, perch, and pike. The Deatnu/Tana River is renowned for its salmon, some of which can be found in the Karasjok area. During late summer and autumn, the Finnmark Plateau is adorned with the golden hues of cloudberries, and in September, the tart red lingonberries appear. Hunting birds like grouse, geese, and duck is a significant local activity.
