Modes of transport

Roads

Road signs are written in Arabic and English (inconsistent spelling) throughout Oman. Brown signposts signal most sites of tourist interest. Petrol, all of which is unleaded, is widely available and comparatively cheap. Most petrol stations usually have modern, well-stocked shops.

Public transport

City and intercity buses are operated by Mwasalat (www.mwasalat.om), which has daily services to/from the main provincial cities for less than OR10. Buses are usually on time, comfortable, air-conditioned and safe.

Trains

No passenger trains operate in Oman.

Taxis

Reliable, metered, red-and-white Mwasalat taxis (www.mwasalat.om) are beginning to appear in Muscat, and these can be used around town and to points of interest outside the city.

Flying

Oman Air services domestic airports and a selection of Middle East and subcontinental destinations.

Health Precautions

Take out comprehensive travel insurance before departure to cover overseas medical costs, including evacuation. Make sure your policy includes adequate coverage for any pre-existing conditions.

Food and Drink

Most restaurants in Oman serve Middle Eastern fare, laced with Indian dishes introduced by the large and widely scattered expat community.

Money

The currency of Oman is the Omani rial (OMR), divided into 1,000 baisas. Foreign currency can be exchanged at banks, exchange bureaux, hotels, and at the airport. Outside banking hours, moneychangers operate in the evenings and at weekends. US Dollars are recommended. American Express, MasterCard, and Visa credit cards are readily accepted in large shops and hotels and by an increasing number of souq traders. Most banks in cities and towns have ATMs.
